DUI arrests drop dramatically in California cities

Dublin is in a unique spot. Close enough to Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose for big-city cultural, social and sporting events, but far enough away that don't have their gridlock and urban congestion.

One aspect of the more intensely urban life that we're missing is in the form of a surprising trend: arrests for drunk driving are down dramatically in California's big cities, the San Jose Mercury News reports. A recent study says the cause of the welcome drop in DUI busts is the recent surge in ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft.

The University of California at Davis study found that arrests are down by a whopping 28 percent in San Jose. The drop is even bigger in San Diego, where DUI busts are down 32 percent. The reduction in Sacramento is also impressive at 26 percent. The drops in San Francisco-Oakland and Los Angeles are slightly more modest. Both the Bay cities and L.A. experienced decreases of 14 percent in the two years since ride-sharing began in their areas.

"This makes sense to me," said Sgt. Michael Trudeau of the San Jose Police Department. "Our traffic enforcement unit has seen a huge increase in Lyft and Uber drivers come through our DUI checkpoints, and I know from personally observing their clients that I'm very thankful many chose not to drive themselves."

The study said that the top reason for using ride-sharing services is difficulty in finding parking. The second most common reason: avoiding getting behind the wheel after drinking.

As you know, California's DUI penalties are among the harshest in the nation. Your freedom, driver's license and more are on the line when you're arrested for driving while impaired.

If you have been charged with driving while you're intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, contact an attorney experienced in DUI defense.
